The weekend was great - we had fabulous fall weather to enjoy. We spent Sunday enjoying being home, catching up on Netflix and binge watching Homeland.
I signed up for a pottery class that starts in November. I'm excited to learn something new. I also toured a gym nearby and started the trial period. I was sore from Thursday's workout and loved it. The holiday weight needs to come off, and then some. I already miss my Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast but it's so much easier to avoid eating 400 calories rather than try to burn it off later. So back to calorie counting for me. I have a very realistic goal weight in mind before we attempt a transfer and I hope to reach it. I can only do that if I get back in the better-eating mindset.
Friday morning was the final dose of antibiotics. I had a sour taste in my mouth throughout the two weeks of meds so I'm glad they're done. I hope this did the trick and that I won't need a third round. We are now at phase II of the delay: two week wait before biopsy. After that is the wait for results.
We're looking for a destination for a mini vacation. Last year we were itching to get away and hadn't yet decided on whether we could make a major trip to Israel work (it did, in Jan). We ended up doing a fall trip to Boston for a few days and really enjoyed it.
Now that the zika ban has lifted, I really want to visit Florida. I miss the beach. We spent all our points last year on the major trip, so we would have to pay for the Florida trip out of pocket. It doesn't seem like a lot at first, but without points we're looking at nearly $1500 for RT airfare, car rental, and hotel for three nights. I could probably find a few deals and get it down closer to $1000 but that's still a chunk of change to spend on a weekend.
So I'm also looking at more local getaways, and maybe do a Sun/Mon instead of including the rest of the weekend to cut costs but still get the flavor of a change of scenery before we move forward with treatment.
I've applied to three different jobs so far. I'm only applying to positions I would actually consider leaving my job for. I know I won't find anything that has all the same perks, but I also know that a new position is a new opportunity to learn, grow, bring in more income, and hopefully be more stimulating.

Getting ready for IVF 7
Over the holiday my nurse emailed me to let me know she's moving positions and that I'll have to get assigned a new nurse. It took a few days of back and forth but then I involved my doctor and was finally assigned a new nurse. We set a baseline date around my work schedule and I'm working on getting a quote for medication from several different pharmacies.
In the meantime I also started getting information from our new financial counselor. I got us a refund for a portion of the last cycle because we overpaid for something that should have been submitted to insurance. It's crazy how on top of things I have to be - isn't that literally their job? They just don't care how they get paid. If payment comes from insurance great, if it happens to come from our pocket also great. It's a challenge to constantly be on the ball and know that if I miss something then we lose out.
I'm trying to not overthink this cycle. Whatever will be will be. IVF 6 kicked me in the nuts with recovery and results. I'm hoping that an upcoming Jan trip will be enough motivation to keep me happy and energized. Bottom line is that it's a hellish 3 weeks and regardless of results it too shall pass.
So how did we get to this decision? As I was thinking about what we want to do next, I tried figuring out how to do another cycle and another transfer before January. I don't know why that was a deadline in my mind. It's possible because the clinic OR shuts down the last week of December for their yearly scrubbing and they don't start any new cycles leading up to that week. No matter how I sliced it, I couldn't get the calendar to fit both an IVF and a transfer which meant we had to choose one. In the back of my mind I was also thinking that it would be nice to do a trip and take a real break.
My husband's work schedule dictates our vacation schedule and we calculated that it may be possible to take a trip in 2018. The more we talked about it the more we realized how much we both want to go. We decided to try to book a trip for earliest possible time in 2018. With that decision made everything else seemed to fall in place. We knew we didn't want to try to do a transfer before the trip which made it easy to choose the time in Nov/Dec for another retrieval. At this point the bar is set so low that the very least will be that we tried something and didn't waste the time, regardless of the results of the cycle. My office is closed for winter break at the end of December so I'll have a solid week for recovery.
Even though it's only mid-October I asked my new nurse to see if she can schedule the retrieval for early December. It gives me time to get back to some routine first and get my head in the game. It also allows me to take care of several work events between now and then without the stress of the cycle and meds. It also gives me the chance to enjoy the Thanskgiving break. It just makes sense overall. There's not much that we can control when it comes to treatment, but for the things that we can it makes a difference.

Boston
We did a quickie getaway to Boston for a few days. We used points for hotel and flights, so only ended up paying for transportation (Uber and taxis), activities, and food.
The itinerary included a whale watching cruise, guided Freedom Trail tour, self-guided fenway park stroll, and walking around Harvard and along the Charles River. We lucked out with beautiful weather. It was an awesome chance to get a change of scenery without using too many vacation days. We had a great time.

Appointments, errands, progress
For the first time since May 19, the date of the ultrasound which changed everything, I started really feeling like myself. I still carry the baggage around but at least I'm starting to see beyond the fog. What attributed to this change? I can't pinpoint an exact moment it happened, but I think it has a lot to do with things going on this week.
Sunday we did something out of the ordinary for us and went kayaking. It was way out of my comfort zone to plan a bbq and go with a big group and figure out all the details of who's bringing what. I ended having a slight meltdown yelling to my husband about someone on the way, but after that it was such a non-issue and ended up being a lovely day.
I bookended appointments both Tuesday and Wednesday before and after work that it basically became the week of -ists: dermatologist, dentist, therapist, cardiologist. My friend suggested that maybe I missed having daily doctor's appointments. It does seem like it, right? It's not intentional, honest.
I started Tues morning with an appointment at the dermatologist. They removed a cyst/mole of sorts that I've had for years. It was entirely cosmetic but I haven't wanted to deal with it in the past because stitches would interfere with mikvah, plus the location on my thigh would make it annoying for fertility treatment with docs poking around. I figured now is a good a time as any since those are both currently irrelevant. It was a quick and easy appointment and I got to work early. After work I went to see the infertility therapist. I could write a whole post about that appointment, but I'll summarize it instead. Pros: it was good to talk to someone who knows all the people and terminology. Even though she's not directly related with the clinic, she knows all the doctors and nurses. She's sympathetic and easy to talk to. The office is well organized and convenient. Cons: I didn't really see the point. She's not going to fix anything or change the past. In her assessment she says that I need to give it time. I left feeling ok and scheduled for another appt in a month. I don't immediately see the benefit but I'll see her again on the chance that there may be one. Biggest con is that she doesn't accept insurance.
Wednesday was also busy. I started the day getting my permanent crown put in post root canal. Another thing happily crossed off my list. Then I went to a brit/baby naming. This was a friend who got married for the second time and just had her first baby. We were asked to kvatter but turned it down. I stopped accepting for non-family. It's nice to be asked but bittersweet. Anyway, one of the baby's grandparents is a big deal in the community so the place was packed. There were easily 300 people there - it was a big party. Everything was decorated in "baby boy" colors and decor. It was beautiful and I felt overwhelmed but not so much that I had to run out. Or cry. It was encouraging rather than not. I'm not sure I can explain it. After that I went to work and called the dentist because the crown put in earlier needed adjusting. I ran back to the dentist at lunchtime to get it fixed, then grabbed a bagel and headed back to work for a few hours before going to the cardiologist for the stress tests.
My office is closed next week and I'm planning out the week so I don't have too much down time to mope. I also have several vacation days I'll lose in Sept if I don't take them so I would really love to take a vacation. My husband has the opposite problem - he's barely got enough vacation days to scrape together a weekend getaway. It's so discouraging to try to plan a trip and keep hitting a brick wall (for time off, expenses, zika-free location) but I've been freshly motivated to try to make it a reality. We're still trying to save a lot of my husband's vacation days for a big trip but right now I'm focusing on getting a breather and a change of scenery, even if it's just a couple of days.
Today marks 5 weeks since the d&c. Still waiting for AF to show up. I'm still not sure what to do with the next cycle: IVF 6 or FET 6. Both are good options. Both are intense in different ways. Both have pros and cons. I can also skip a cycle to extend the break and just take more time to think about it, though the idea of delaying indefinitely doesn't sit well either.

FET 5: 5dp6dt
It's using up all my willpower to stay away from the pee sticks. The urge to test got really strong yesterday afternoon and I convinced myself not to since it wasn't fmu. I woke up this morning and held my bladder for a full 5 min in bed while I contemplated whether or not to test. Previous logic finally won and I didn't test.
In the past two transfers it wasn't getting a positive beta that was the issue - it's getting the numbers to continue rising and the pregnancy to stick around for a baby to grow. Peeing on a stick now won't tell me the future. If it is negative on the pee stick (falsely or not) then I'll be upset and have a harder time all the way until beta. At least not knowing lets me believe for a little longer and gives me ammo against the negative voice telling me it probably didn't work.
Thankfully Sunday's cramping subsided with rest. I still canceled Monday's lunch plans. I stayed home and relaxed throughout yom tov. Today is my last day of vacation and while I'm happy to go back to routine I still need to remember to keep taking it easy.
Last pregnancy at this time I had what felt like micro-cramping, sort of like butterfly wings. It had started right after the transfer and was constant until the pregnancy ended. This time it's more of a full/heavy feeling which started around day 2. When I move or twist I feel a sharp pull in my side, near the ovaries, depending which side I twisted to. Otherwise it feels like a light weight on my lower abdomen regardless of whether I'm standing or sitting. I noticed that drinking regularly prevents the cramps from getting stronger so I'm keeping a water bottle nearby at all times and take a sip whenever I notice it.
Also new this time is the nausea, likely due to the meds. It starts out as hunger and within seconds turns to nausea. I've tried to get ahead of it by not getting hungry but it happens no matter what. It usually hits around 10 or 11 am. I read online that prednisone can cause nausea and insomnia in some people. So you can take it in the morning and be able to sleep or take it at night and sleep through the nausea but wake up at like 3 am wide awake. I don't think there's a winning combo but we do what we have to just giving this embryo the best chance possible as best we know how. It's gross to force down water while nauseous so I take small sips and hope it adds up.

My pineapple got almost all eaten. By this morning what was left of it was looking a little sad so I skipped it and had scrambled eggs instead. Beta in 6 days!

FET 5: Lining check
My appointment went super smoothly. I was well-hydrated and had my fav tech drawing blood so it was quick and painless. I was called back for the ultrasound shortly after and was back in my car less than 20 min after parking.
Lining is at 10.37 mm :) On the way there I remembered how it was just at the minimum of 8 last time and started worrying. I decided not to freak out until there was something to worry about and focused on traffic instead.
At around 2:00 PM I got the bloodwork results back that all is good to continue. I'm starting to get excited! Because of how we scheduled the transfer around holidays I have a night off and we start PIO shots in the butt tomorrow. Lovenox shots in the belly start on Monday.
So far I'm noticing two side effects from the Prednisone: energy/insomnia and nausea. I'm going to sleep exhausted and waking up at 5:00 AM completely awake and going nonstop all day. I've never lacked energy but this is more than I'm used to. No complaints. The other side effect is nausea. I've noticed that if I let myself get hungry then it can quickly become nausea. It passes quickly, even quicker if I have a snack handy. I notice it more toward the morning, which is usually when I take the meds. I'm on a very low dosage so I don't even know if these are actual side effects or just things I expect to happen and I'm noticing them. Next week I'll add another med to the cocktail and we'll see how that shakes things up.
I'm officially on spring break - hooray! So happy to have a few days off. I'm even excited for Pesach. I did all the shopping and errands. The only thing left is to flip the kitchen on Saturday night and spend Sunday and Monday cooking and filling up the freezer. My in-laws are scheduled to be here from Monday - Thursday.
I'm getting excited for the transfer. I oscillate between not wanting to get too attached and being sooo happy it's almost here. My husband is aiming for "cautiously optimistic" but I think the train has already left the station for me - I can't wait to see our embryo again!! I can't help but feel like this is it, regardless of all our past failures, regardless of the stats, regardless of what the little negative voice in the back of my mind says. I'm really hoping this is it for us. I hope these new meds are what make the difference between failure and success. I know we did everything possible on our part.
I haven't decided if I'll do the pee sticks this time. I've had false positives in the past and they just made the bad news harder to hear. On the other hand my clinic waits 13 days before doing the first beta and that's a really long time to wait! I already have the pee sticks so it's really just what I end up deciding. Hope is everything in these cycles so why shatter it unnecessarily with a possible false negative and freak myself out? If I don't test I get to hold on to the PUPO title just a bit longer.
See you soon, tiny embryo. I love you already.

Labor Day
We had a great weekend. To celebrate our 10 year engagement anniversary we did a quickie getaway to DC for a night. The Greek exhibit at the National Geographic museum was interesting, and we rediscovered our lack of appreciation of modern art after visiting the Phillips Collection. We went out for dinner and stayed the night in a hotel that was hosting a big wedding celebration. It was nice getting away and we loved coming home.
After a situation with family, I had an honest conversation with my pregnant sister over text about how much about it I want shared with me. With her being pregnant, I'm officially the last one in the family not to have gone through pregnancy, labor, or child-rearing and it seems all family gatherings include conversation about that and only that. I want to be ok with it and I didn't choose to feel this way but I do and it's not fair to expect them to be sensitive if I don't speak up when something bothers me.
In other news, my 4-year-old neighbor developed a crush on us. He loves saying hello and asking questions. I was unpacking our bags from our DC trip when I heard the doorbell. I went to answer it and there he was, asking, "Can you invite me over?" as I tried to make out what he was asking his mom comes running, apologizing for him bothering us. She explained that he'd been haranguing them to come visit us but they told him that he wasn't invited but that didn't dissuade him. His solution was to come ring the doorbell and ask to be invited. So clever! As he came running up the steps to our house I called out to her that we'll go to the backyard and she could meet us there. We sat on the swing and he started asking questions... Why do you have a fence? Why are there two chairs? Why do we have a BBQ?.... Normal kids questions. Of course he also got to... Why don't you have kids? What can I answer? "That's just how it is." When he asked why again, I repeated it, "It's just how it is."
It's not a lie. Sure, I could go into the story of fertility treatment, and talk about our failed attempts, or what our plan is moving forward. But it all boils down to one fact: it's just how it it is right now. Also, he's a kid!
It was adorable. As I walked him back to his house I told him he can come visit any time.

Beach day
Late last week I found out that my office will be closed on Monday due to power-related repairs so my husband took off Monday too and we planned a short getaway. We chose Ocean City, MD because it has the beach, we were able to get accommodations at the last minute, and it's a fairly quick drive.
We got home last night happy and slightly toasted. Even with waterproof SPF 50 sunscreen being reapplied nearly every hour, we still came home sporting some fierce burns. We had a large hotel room with a fridge and microwave, and a balcony with a direct view of the ocean. It was a great - so glad we were able to get away.

Results
Bloodwork results came back some time in the afternoon and the voicemail said that HCG is now at negative levels, which I assume means back to zero. This officially closes the chapter on FET #3.
AF started yesterday. It feels like my uterus is mad at me. Period from hell has arrived. Tylenol was helping but cramps have gotten painfully intense and I'm debating upgrading to something stronger.
In prep for the in-person appointment with the doc I requested a copy of my file. I don't care if they think I'm leaving the clinic (I have no plans for that now). I want to see what he sees so we're on the same page.
I want a change of scenery and I really miss the beach. Eff Zika. We don't have friends or family to stay with near the beach so accommodations will be the biggest expense. I have points for flights and I have points for hotels, but for some reason I can't seem to make the two line up in the same city. I don't have the talent of getting great deals at amazing prices. If I try to save money the place is always gross. If we want to go somewhere specific it's going to cost at least $1,000 for just a few nights. I'll keep looking.

FET #3: Baseline
It happened and we're all ok! I was so anxious about the appointment this morning but of course it was fine. And I'm fine now that it's over and we've officially started the cycle. I don't even know why I was so anxious. Everything looked good according to the ultrasound, and bloodwork came back ok so we're good to start. First del estrogen shot tonight and again every third day until further notice. I'm ok with it. It is what it is.
The appointment this morning went well. I arrived at a great time so there was no wait. I got taken back right away, quick ultrasound, painless bloodwork. (My official recorded weight today was four pounds less than what they had for me at my last retrieval which was about a month ago. Weee!) Quick and simple. I was out the door so fast that I got to work earlier than I do on regular days.
There was a little drama last night when we realized the paperwork never got signed. I had gotten it from the nurse electronically, signed it, and it was supposed to be sent to my husband for signature but he never got it. So the nurse resent it to me and said "try again." I thought she had meant for him to try again and I forwarded that email to him. He kept pushing it off because he wanted to read the document in its entirety, so it kept getting procrastinated until I said last night that it needed to be signed. So he sits down to read and sign but he never got it still from the clinic and all he had was that email I had sent. There was no one to call in the clinic and I was so upset because I knew they would delay a start without signed paperwork and having him go down there was such a waste of time. Our plan was for me to go to the clinic earlier than my scheduled appointment, have them send it to him as I'm standing there, and I would text it to him letting him know to do it now so that I could move on with the rest of the appointment.
This morning I woke up and had a thought: what if the nurse meant to tell me that I'm supposed to sign first and then a copy gets automatically sent to him? I figured it can't hurt to try so I dig up her email saying to try again, signed electronically, and a second letter he get an email. Success! I can't believe it took that much drama to figure it out. So yeah, it was technically my fault he didn't get it but had he not waited until the last minute it wouldn't have been a big deal figuring it out. All's well and that ends well.
My next appointment is in June. She told me the date to come in and I asked if it was at all possible to move it up a day since I have a huge work project happening at the same time. She said she wanted a specific number of doses first so I said no problem, we'll make it work. Obviously. I'm not postponing it. So June will be a little hectic, that's fine.
The weather is being so ridiculous. I was in a sweatshirt outside nearly the entire last week. In May! Winter: you had your turn and you didn't take it!! If we're having no Spring I demand extra days be added to fall! But it is technically almost summer and I have plans for Summer 2016. We're looking to buy a new car in June. I also want to plan a beach vacation or maybe something to a nearby lake. I put bedroom redecorating on hold while I'm busy with work.
I stopped thinking about zika because it's out of my control. I got my yard sprayed and bought tons of repellent. It's been too cold to wear repellent, but I have it and will wear it daily once it gets warmer, and that's as much as I can do. It won't do me any good to agonize over it.
I'm determined to try not to take any HPTs after the transfer. I hope I stick to that. I remember how agonizing it was testing daily, sometimes multiple times. The 2ww is such a stressful time for me and I know I need to prepare in order to avoid going bonkers. I'll have to work on that.
I'm excited for the weekend just to be home and veg out!!! Yay TV and sleep!

Results
Got the results from my mole: looks benign so no further treatment required. Great!
I also got a general voicemail over the holiday from the lab testing the embryo biopsies asking to give them a call. Since I didn't get it until after the holiday was over on Saturday night I can't talk to anyone until they reopen on Monday. My feeling is that they needed authorization to use the credit card on file, which is annoying because I had already given permission previously and had they ran it on Friday instead of getting permission we may already have the results by now. I get why they need authorization and logically I guess I prefer that they don't use my card without asking first, but now I'm anxious to find out results. At least I assume that's why they called.
Pesach is over. All that work and now it's done! Our guests left this morning and the house suddenly feels enormous. I love my house and I enjoyed spending my stay-cation here.
I started looking at options to go for a summer trip this year. In addition, I also started looking at vacation spots for a big trip for our 10th anniversary next summer. We never went on a honeymoon so I'm excited to spend time and energy planning one now.
In addition, I decided I need more hobbies in my life. I made a list of things I should try over the summer: tennis, clay wheel throwing, learn an instrument, yoga, running, camping, writing. I may or may not do all of them, but it's a starting point and I feel the need to stretch past my comfort zone. I asked family members to think about things I can add to my list. Willing to take any and all suggestions under consideration.
